Environmental Risk Communication Workshop

Dates TBD

Sponsored By:
The NIOSH Funded Sunshine ERC

Course Description

The 2-day class will be taught by Ms. Robin DeHate of the Sunshine ERC and GEI Consultants, as well as Mr. Tod Lyons of American Compliance Technologies. The class is designed for persons who may find themselves in a High Concern, Low Trust environment; federal and state on-scene coordinators, supervisors and other persons who will deal with the public (and the media) or when there is a continuous public or media interest about plant, industry, or business operations related to the Federal Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA). The law was designated to help local communities protect public health, safety and the environment from chemical hazards. This workshop will not focus on specific aspects of 42 USC 11001, but will offer students practical ways about how to deal with an angry, upset or concerned public. Practical exercises over the 2 days will give students hands-on experience and build confidence for times when risk communication is necessary in the workplace, at a community meeting or when dealing with complaints from concerned citizens.

Objectives

Upon Completion of the full 16 hours, students will be able to:

  • Define Risk Communication
  • Explain why, when and how it is used
  • Identify and overcome various obstacles that may hinder effectively communicating your message
  • Describe how to develop and communicate key messages to a number of different stakeholders.

Accreditation
