Course Description

The purpose of the NIOSH Approved Spirometry Course is to train individuals how to properly perform valid spirometric tests; interpret results; and how to recognize the strengths, applications and limitations of spirometry in the workplace setting.  Individuals will be taught the calculations for basic spirometric parameters, observe spirometric techniques by the instructors and practice these techniques in hands-on practice. 

 


Objectives

Upon the completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

  • Use standardized methods to obtain acceptable and reproducible spirograms.
  • Correctly perform calculations for basic spirometric parameters.
  • Implement appropriate quality assurance procedures for spirometric equipment.
  • Recognize the applications, strengths and limitations of spirometry in the occupational health setting.
 


Accreditation

A continuing education unit (CEU) is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction. CEUs provide a measure of educational achievement, and are widely recognized by employers, industry, professional associations, and certification and licensing agencies as evidence of education progress. Participants who successfully complete programs that qualify for Continuing Education Units will receive CEUs according to this scale. This course is approved for 2.25 CEUs.

 


Course Evaluation

Attendees are required to pass a written exam with an 80% and a pass/fail hands on exam at the conclusion of this course.
